The 2016 Pulitzer Prizes were announced this week, launching celebrations in newsrooms, offices, and writing desks everywhere. Created after Joseph Pulitzer's death in 1904—his will established their creation—the prizes are awarded in 21 categories, on subjects including journalism, poetry, music, and photography.
This year's crop of winners included some familiar names—The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The New Yorker were in there—and fan favorites: Emily Nussbaum won for her criticism in The New Yorker; Lin-Manuel Miranda won for the widely lauded musical Hamilton.
Works covered many of the year's biggest stories and most pressing topics, nationally and worldwide. The photography staff of Thomson Reuters, for example, won "For gripping photographs, each with its own voice, that follow migrant refugees hundreds of miles across uncertain boundaries to unknown destinations."
