Read on for everything you need to know about dog-friendly vacation rentals.

Dogs are as much a part of the family as any two-legged member, as nearly half of American households can attest, and with pet travel booming in the form of better airport facilities and even websites dedicated to the subject, why spend vacation separated from your furry loved one? These 11 pooch-worthy cabins and villas welcome the whole pack, so Fido can join in the fun, too.

Portland, Maine

The Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth's Crescent Beach State Park is renowned for both its eco- and dog-friendliness. Three beachfront cottages have ocean views and won't cost a dime extra to accommodate the family dog. From October to March, take nature walks along the beach to spot protected wildlife like New England Cottontails and Piping Plovers. A host of amenities are available for your pup like beach towels and special treats at turndown, and the resort can even arrange daycare for when you head into nearby Portland.

Bend, Oregon

The Pacific Northwest town of Bend, Oregon has a second name: Dog Town, USA. That's because this rustic locale has one of the highest per-capita populations of dogs anywhere in the world, and local businesses catering to the four-legged citizens follow suit. Over 40 restaurants in town accommodate canine family members and miles of trails are designated for off-leash treks. A local outfitter can even suit your dog in a floatation vest for canoe excursions. Use the 1,800-acre Brasada Ranch and it's dog-friendly cabins as a base for outdoor activities, or simply lounge at the giant campfire roasting s'mores and pondering the stars with your pooch.

Napa Valley, California

Wine and cuisine are two excellent reasons to head to Napa, and while your dog can't actively partake in the imbibing, a stay at Calistoga Ranch will give them the best wine country has to offer. For starters, on arriving to one of the 50 freestanding cabins set among the Upper Valley oaks, your dog receives a wine bottle filled with dog treats, and you will receive a Happy Trails newsletter—a guide to the area's pet-friendly establishments. For dinner, canine room service features organic preparations like braised short rib and the house Ranch burger. And if that isn't enough, the resort's daily scavenger hunt promises treats of apple-wood smoked bacon.

Provence, France

Generally speaking, dogs enjoy a rarefied freedom in France—even receiving their own seat at restaurant tables—and this limestone chateau is no exception. Set on an active olive farm and wine vineyard in pristine Alpilles Park, Domaine de Manville is a five-star resort with nine private villas, each open to canine guests. Nearby attractions like a medieval castle, and Carrieres de Lumieres—art on the walls of a stone quarry—are dog friendly, but Fido may want to stay at the villa, relaxing on his fluffy dog bed, on the terrace overlooking the countryside.

If your ideal holiday is made of sugar-sand beaches and breezy palm trees, this secluded Design Hotel on Grenada's Caribbean coast will keep your pampered pooch happy. LaLuna's cottages sit at the top of a hill for panoramic views of the sea, each with open-air verandas and private plunge pools. The resort's Italian owners are dog-lovers. They'll welcome Fifi with a pizza toy on arrival and can even arrange private walks for her along the beach each morning.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

At Ten Thousand Waves in Santa Fe, a Japanese ryokan, each Townsman room has a private fenced courtyard and soaking tub, where, after a meditative hike in the desert, you and Fido can chill out into bliss.

Asheville, North Carolina

Perhaps one of the best places on the planet to take your four-legged companion is outside of Asheville, where the all-cottage resort Barkwells was built with dogs in mind. Your pup can roam freely from his own door in each of the property's eight one- and two-bedroom cabins, which have gated porches and fenced-in yards. Acres of grass, a pond stocked with fish, and farm animals like chickens and goats, will keep him (and all of his new friends) entertained for days.

Genevea, Switzerland

Traveling for work? What could be better than having your dog there to greet you at night? In Switzerland's cosmopolitan city center, the glass-walled La Villa du Lac sits on the shore of Lake Geneva, just minutes from town and the airport. From luxury brand La Reserve, this private property caters to you and your pup equally. Dogs at La Reserve receive bowls personalized with their name, and monogrammed blankets, while owners unwind at the city's largest spa.

Turks & Caicos

Beds, bones, toys, bowls, snacks, and even a leash—the ultra premium villas at Amanyara in Turks & Caicos spare no detail when it comes to pampering your pup. Several blissfully serene multi-roomed villas with dedicated chefs and housekeepers are a homestead for days exploring protected parks and swimming in the aquamarine sea.

San Diego, California

Home of the original Dog Beach, San Diego is one of the most dog-friendly locales in the country, with several beaches that welcome dogs off-leash at any time of day. At Beach Village, the all-cottage outcrop of the landmarked Hotel del Coronado, individual oceanfront villas welcome you and your pack, and are just steps from Coronado Dog Beach. Among the standard dog-friendly accoutrements, you'll find gourmet pet room service and Yappy Hour on Sundays, where dogs and owners mingle on the deck.

Atlanta, Georgia

At the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Barnsley Resort, an antebellum manor and parterre garden, offers two private cottages that welcome furry guests. Dogs may roam the extensive property and join meals at several outdoor restaurants for farm-to-table Southern food, while the resort's "furry" godmother will tend to your pup's every need. Miles of trails, horseback riding, and Frisbee golf are all part of an active day. At night Fido drifts to sleep in his own bed on the hearth of a wood-burning fireplace.
