Lauren and Stefano on vacation in Costa Rica in 2007.

2004Where: Hua Hin, ThailandRelationship: Married(As told by Lauren Tintoni)In
2004, I decided to move to Thailand and teach English in Bangkok.
At the time, I was  just focusing on my new journey and trying to learn
Thai.
I wanted to do a little sightseeing, so a new friend suggested that I visit
Hua Hin.
It was only about three hours away and was the perfect place for a weekend
getaway.
Since I was by myself, I spent the day laying on the beach and reading books.
That’s when I noticed a group of good-looking guys standing nearby.
I was feeling adventurous, so I decided to go over and talk to them.
I started up a conversation with one of the guys who told me that the
group was visiting from Italy.
I am fluent in Italian (I actually spent some time living in Italy), so we
started conversing in their native tongue.
My language skills caught his friend Stefano’s attention, and when he
turned towards me… I was a goner.
He was tall, dark, Italian and had blue eyes.
I was done.

much we had in common.
Like me, he loved to travel and was actually on a backpacking tour through
Thailand.
Our connection was instant, and he asked me to join the group for dinner that
night.
I had intended to fly back to Bangkok at 5 p.
m.
that evening,  but I wanted to see Stefano again, so I traded my bus
ticket to a train ticket that left at midnight.
We had a great time at dinner, and Stefano made plans to meet me in Bangkok
two days later.
We had such an amazing two days in the city together.
I showed him around, we went to dinner, and shared our first kiss.
After such a short time, we both knew that we had something special.
He was such a sweet and generous guy, so as he departed for Italy, we
exchanged information and promised to keep in touch.
While we were apart we communicated with phone calls, emails and hand- written
letters.

(Photo: Lauren Tintoni)I had plans to visit Sri Lanka in Dec.
2004, but instead, I changed my ticket and decided to visit Stefano in Italy
over Christmas.
I arrived in Italy on Christmas Day, and the next day, the tsunami hit Sri
Lanka.
My previous plans would have put me in the path of the tsunami devastation,
and at the moment I realized that it was fate for me and Stefano to be
together.
I loved his energy, generosity, and charisma.
He was everything I was looking for in a partner.
So, after the holidays I went back to Thailand, finished my last month, and
then moved to Italy in Feb.
2005.

I started teaching English and we continued to grow as a couple as we
traveled around the world to India and Africa.
Once I finally got all of my papers in order, Stefano popped the question on
the beach during a trip to Costa Rica.

(Photo: Lauren Tintoni)For our honeymoon we embarked on a 3.
5 month journey that took us to Beijing, Laos, Bangkok, Bali, and Kuala
Lumpur.
We moved to Canada in 2012, and we live and work at my family’s
business in Toronto.
When I tell the story of how I met Stefano, I get goosebumps.
I’ve found the love of my life thanks to a chance encounter on a beach
in Thailand,  and I look forward to starting a family and continuing
 to travel the world together.
